What is Supplemental Security Income?

SSI benefits are monthly cash payments that help certain low-income individuals to meet their basic needs. These benefits are available to individuals who are disabled, blind or over age of 65. The purpose of these benefits is to help people pay for food, clothing and shelter.

Medicaid benefits may also be extended to SSI recipients. Medicaid helps to pay for hospital stays, medical bills and other health-related costs.

Who is Eligible for SSI Benefits?

Any adult over age 65 may apply for SSI benefits.  Adults and children may qualify if they are disabled or blind.

In order to receive SSI benefits, you must also meet certain financial requirements. The limits for SSI qualification change each year. If your income is too high or your assets exceed a certain level, you will not be eligible.

How Do I Apply for SSI Benefits?

Unlike Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, there is no online application for SSI benefits. To apply, you must contact the SSA to make an appointment at your local Social Security office to begin the process.

Your attorney can help you make this appointment and can attend meetings and hearings with you, easing your way through the process.

The SSA asks for several types of evidence to support your SSI claim. This evidence includes your:

  • Personal information (Social Security number and citizenship status)
  • Income, work history and financial resources
  • Living arrangements
  • Medical conditions.

If you are applying on behalf of a child, the SSA will also ask for information about the child’s medical conditions.

While there is no online application to begin the process, you can follow the progress of your already-opened application or appeal online.

An Orlando SSI Benefits Lawyer Can Help You Find Peace of Mind

You may choose someone to help you through the SSI application process. This person does not have to be a lawyer, but a lawyer’s help can be invaluable.

An experienced SSI benefits attorney knows the system well and is held to standards of confidentiality that non-lawyers do not have to meet.

If you are denied SSI benefits and need to appeal the decision, you can continue to work with your initial attorney, choose a new lawyer to help with your appeal or begin to work with a lawyer for the first time if you did not have one to help you with your initial application.
