The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated there were more than eleven thousand people who died in drunk driving crashes. If you calculate that on a minute by minute basis, there is approximately one death on the roads every 50 minutes caused by a drunk driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety have worked together to try to create a number of alcohol detection systems. There appears to be a few promising developments. The first is the increased effectiveness of interlock devices which have the driver breath into a machine and it prevents them to drive or start the car.

The second device would be on a touch-based system. This means that an infrared light would be used to calibrate the alcohol content of a piece of tissue. The person would simply put their finger on the light and if they were impaired that care would not start.
